Gold purity describes how much of an item’s weight is gold rather than alloy metal. Karats express purity on a 24-part scale, while fineness expresses it in parts per thousand. For example, 18-karat gold is 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75% gold, and is commonly marked 750.
Purity is essential when calculating the fine gold content, melt value, and bullion premium of a coin, bar, or other gold product.
The basic relationships are:

What Does Gold Purity Mean?
A gold item can be pure or alloyed with metals such as silver, copper, nickel, zinc, or palladium. Its purity tells you what proportion of the total weight is gold.
For a hypothetical 10-gram item:
- 24K or .9999 gold contains approximately 10 grams of gold;
- 18K or .750 gold contains 7.5 grams of gold;
- 14K gold contains approximately 5.83 grams of gold;
- 9K or .375 gold contains 3.75 grams of gold.
The remaining weight consists of alloy metals. Alloying can change hardness, durability, color, manufacturing behavior, and wear resistance, but those properties do not change the mathematical definition of purity.
When calculating melt value, use the weight of the fine gold rather than the total weight of the alloy.
Karat vs. Fineness vs. Percentage
Gold purity can be written in three common ways.
Karats
The karat system divides the alloy into 24 parts by weight:
Karat purity = Gold parts ÷ 24
An 18K alloy contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals. A 22K alloy contains 22 parts gold and 2 parts other metals.
In American English, gold purity is normally written as karat. British English commonly uses carat. Both may be abbreviated as K, k, Kt, or ct, depending on the market and product.
Fineness
Fineness expresses gold content in parts per thousand by weight. The London Bullion Market Association defines fineness this way and notes that gold-market fineness is commonly written with four significant figures, such as 999.9.
Examples:
- 999.9 fineness = 999.9 parts gold per 1,000 = 99.99%;
- 916 fineness = 916 parts gold per 1,000 = 91.6%;
- 750 fineness = 750 parts gold per 1,000 = 75%;
- 585 fineness = 585 parts gold per 1,000 = 58.5%.
The decimal point may be shown in different positions or omitted. Depending on the marking convention, 999.9, .9999, 9999, and 99.99% can all describe the same nominal purity.
Percentage
Percentage purity states the gold share out of 100:
Percentage purity = Decimal purity × 100
For example:
0.750 × 100 = 75% gold
The three systems describe the same underlying proportion, but the numbers should not be copied between systems without conversion.

This table requires an important qualification: a mathematical karat conversion and an official hallmark standard are not always numerically identical.
For example:
14 ÷ 24 × 1,000 = 583.33
However, 14K products in some markets may use a recognized 585 fineness standard. That mark means at least 585 parts gold per thousand, or 58.5%, rather than exactly 583.33 parts.
The UK government’s hallmarking guidance explains that a fineness mark records precious-metal content in parts per thousand. Regional legal standards, tolerances, and marking rules vary, so use the actual stamped fineness and official product specification rather than replacing it with a rounded conversion from a karat name.
Is 24K Gold the Same as .9999 Gold?
They are closely related descriptions, but they should not automatically be treated as identical specifications.
The karat system defines 24K as all 24 parts gold. In practical refining and product labeling, very high-purity gold may be specified as:
- .999, or 99.9%;
- .9999, or 99.99%;
- .99999, or 99.999%.
These purities can all be described commercially as 24K in different contexts. For a precise metal-value calculation, use the product’s stated numerical fineness rather than assuming that every 24K item is exactly .9999.
Similarly, “pure gold” is often used as a practical description for high-purity investment products, not a claim that every atom in the product is gold.
What Do 999.9, 999, and 995 Gold Mean?
These marks express gold fineness:

The LBMA states that wholesale London Good Delivery gold bars have a minimum fineness of 995. This does not mean that every retail product marked 995 is automatically an LBMA Good Delivery bar. Good Delivery status also depends on bar size, refiner accreditation, markings, production quality, and other requirements.
Likewise, .9999 describes purity, not authenticity, manufacturer reputation, legal-tender status, collectibility, or resale liquidity.
How to Calculate Fine Gold Weight
If you know gross weight and purity:
Fine gold weight = Gross weight × Purity as a decimal
For weights in grams:
Fine gold grams = Gross grams × Purity
To convert fine gold grams to troy ounces:
Fine gold troy ounces = Fine gold grams ÷ 31.1034768
For karat gold:
Fine gold weight = Gross weight × Karats ÷ 24
If an official specification already states the product’s fine gold content, use that figure directly. Do not apply purity a second time.
Example 1: Ten Grams of 18K Gold
Suppose an item has:
- gross weight: 10 grams;
- purity: 18K;
- hypothetical gold spot price: $2,400 per troy ounce.
Convert 18K to decimal purity:
18 ÷ 24 = 0.750
Calculate fine gold weight:
10 g × 0.750 = 7.5 g of fine gold
Convert it to troy ounces:
7.5 ÷ 31.1034768 = 0.241131 fine troy oz
Calculate gold value:
0.241131 × $2,400 = $578.71
This is the theoretical spot-based value of the contained gold before considering refining losses, testing, dealer spreads, fees, stones, non-metal parts, or collectible value.
Example 2: A 20-Gram .9999 Gold Bar
Consider a hypothetical bar with:
- gross weight: 20 grams;
- fineness: .9999;
- hypothetical gold spot price: $2,400 per troy ounce.
Fine gold weight:
20 g × 0.9999 = 19.998 g
Fine gold in troy ounces:
19.998 ÷ 31.1034768 = 0.642951 fine troy oz
Metal value:
0.642951 × $2,400 = $1,543.08
If the manufacturer explicitly guarantees 20 grams of fine gold rather than 20 grams of gross weight, use the guaranteed fine content instead. Read whether the stamped weight refers to total mass or fine gold.
Example 3: A One-Ounce 22K Gold Bullion Coin
A “one-ounce” alloyed gold coin may weigh more than one troy ounce overall while still containing one fine troy ounce of gold.
The United States Mint specifies that the one-ounce American Gold Eagle is 91.67% gold and has a gross weight of 1.0909 troy ounces, or 33.931 grams. It contains its stated one troy ounce of pure gold, with silver and copper adding durability.
For a melt-value calculation:
- use 1.000 fine troy ounce as the gold content;
- do not use 1.0909 troy ounces as though the entire coin were gold;
- do not multiply the stated one fine troy ounce by 91.67% again.
This is why official fine metal content is usually preferable to recomputing the result from rounded gross weight and purity.
Example 4: Comparing Equal-Weight 24K and 18K Items
Suppose two products each weigh 10 grams:

The high-purity product contains approximately 2.499 grams more gold even though both products have the same gross weight.
This does not by itself establish which product is the better purchase. Their prices, premiums, condition, form, authenticity, collectibility, taxes, and resale markets may differ. Purity determines metal content; it does not replace a complete price comparison.
Why Is Gold Alloyed?
Very high-purity gold is comparatively soft. Alloy metals can make an item harder, more resistant to scratches or deformation, or better suited to a particular manufacturing process.
This is why many jewelry alloys use 18K, 14K, 10K, or 9K gold, and why some bullion coins use 22K construction while guaranteeing a specific fine gold content.
Alloying can also change color:
- additional copper can produce a redder or rose tone;
- silver and other pale metals can produce a lighter yellow or greenish tone;
- white-gold alloys use metals that reduce gold’s yellow appearance.
Color is not a reliable purity test. Two alloys of the same karat can have different colors, while plated base metal can resemble solid gold.
Does Higher Purity Mean a Better Bullion Product?
Higher purity means a greater proportion of the product’s weight is gold. It does not automatically mean:
- a lower premium;
- a better resale price;
- greater authenticity;
- lower total cost;
- greater collectibility;
- better suitability for handling.
A 22K bullion coin that contains one guaranteed fine troy ounce of gold can have the same fine gold content as a .9999 coin containing one fine troy ounce. Their gross weights and alloy compositions differ, but both can represent one fine ounce of gold.
Compare actual fine gold content, retail price, premium over spot, dealer buyback terms, and product recognition rather than ranking products by purity alone.
Gold Hallmarks and Other Marks
A numerical fineness stamp is only one possible part of a hallmark or product marking system.
Depending on the product and jurisdiction, markings may identify:
- fineness or karat;
- manufacturer, refiner, mint, or sponsor;
- assay office;
- serial number;
- weight;
- metal type;
- year or production batch.
The UK government’s hallmarking guidance explains that a complete UK hallmark includes a sponsor’s mark, a metal-and-fineness mark, and an assay-office mark. Other countries use different systems.
A lone number should be interpreted in context. For example, 750 on a gold item normally refers to 75% gold, but the number alone does not prove that the mark is genuine or that the whole item has the claimed composition.
Solid Gold vs. Gold-Plated and Gold-Filled Items
Karat or fineness calculations apply straightforwardly when the product is a solid gold alloy throughout. They do not automatically apply to coated products.
- Solid gold alloy: gold is distributed throughout the metal portion.
- Gold-plated: a base item has a surface coating of gold or gold alloy.
- Gold-filled or rolled gold: a gold-alloy layer is mechanically bonded to a base-metal core.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance explains that gold is commonly alloyed for durability and that product markings should identify the karat quality.
For a plated product, multiplying total object weight by the plating karat would be wrong because most of the object may be base metal. You need the actual mass of the gold-bearing layer or a reliable assay and refining estimate.
Can a Purity Mark Confirm Authenticity?
No. A purity mark is a claim about composition, not independent proof.
Authenticity assessment can involve:
- checking official weight and dimensions;
- inspecting mint or refiner details;
- magnetic and electrical-conductivity testing;
- specific-gravity measurement;
- X-ray fluorescence or other spectrometric analysis;
- ultrasound for some bars;
- destructive fire assay in professional contexts.
Different tests answer different questions and have different limitations. A matching weight alone cannot confirm composition, while a surface test may not detect a different internal material.
Common Gold-Purity Mistakes
Treating 18K as 18% gold
Karats use a 24-part scale. Eighteen-karat gold is 18 ÷ 24 = 75% gold, not 18%.
Reading 585 as 58.5 karats
Fineness is measured per thousand. A 585 mark means 58.5% gold and is commonly associated with 14K gold.
Assuming all 24K gold is exactly .9999
Use the numerical fineness stated for the product. Commercial 24K descriptions may be paired with .999, .9999, or another high-purity specification.
Using gross weight as fine gold weight
An alloyed coin or jewelry item includes non-gold metals. Apply purity unless official fine gold content is already supplied.
Applying purity twice
If a mint states that a coin contains one fine troy ounce of gold, that is already the fine gold amount. Do not reduce it again by the coin’s alloy percentage.
Treating a hallmark standard as universal
Recognized fineness standards and labeling rules vary between markets. Use the applicable official specification rather than assuming every 14K, 585, or 916 mark follows identical rules worldwide.
Calculating plated items as solid gold
The total weight of a plated item is not gold-bearing weight. A layer description is not enough to multiply the whole object by a karat percentage.
Assuming purity determines the purchase premium
Premium also depends on product size, manufacturing, demand, supply, dealer costs, payment method, and market conditions. Calculate it from price and actual fine gold value.
