Silver purity describes how much of an item’s weight is silver. It is usually expressed as fineness in parts per thousand: .999 silver is 99.9% silver, while .925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% alloy metal.
Purity must be combined with weight to calculate how much fine silver a coin, round, bar, or solid-silver object contains.
The basic formula is:
Fine silver weight = Gross weight × Silver purity
For example, 100 grams of .925 sterling silver contains:

What Does Silver Purity Mean?
Most silver products are not mathematically 100% silver. A product may include copper or other alloy metals to improve hardness, durability, manufacturing behavior, or wear resistance.
Purity identifies the silver share of the total metal weight:
- .999 silver contains 999 parts silver per 1,000;
- .925 silver contains 925 parts silver per 1,000;
- .900 silver contains 900 parts silver per 1,000;
- .800 silver contains 800 parts silver per 1,000.
The remaining parts are alloy metal. A purity mark does not state the product’s weight, so it cannot determine total silver content by itself.
A 10-gram .999 item contains less silver than a 100-gram .925 item even though it has a higher purity. Fine silver weight depends on both variables.
What Is Silver Fineness?
Fineness expresses precious-metal content in parts per thousand by weight.
Unlike gold purity, which may be expressed in karats or fineness, silver purity is normally described with fineness or a named alloy standard.
The Royal Mint’s guide to metal fineness explains that .925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver, .958 is 95.8% silver, and investment silver is commonly available at 999 or 999.9 fineness.
Silver fineness may be written in several equivalent-looking forms:

The decimal point may be omitted from a hallmark or product stamp. The surrounding context and official specification should identify whether 925 means silver fineness rather than a model number, serial number, or unrelated marking.

This is not a universal legal-labeling table. Recognized standards, tolerances, hallmark systems, and permitted product descriptions vary by country and period.
When a specific mint, refiner, assay office, or manufacturer provides an official specification, use that specification instead of relying only on a general name such as “coin silver” or “continental silver.”
What Does .999 Fine Silver Mean?
.999 silver is 99.9% silver by nominal weight:
999 ÷ 1,000 = 0.999 = 99.9%
The remaining 0.1% may consist of other elements or trace impurities.
The London Bullion Market Association describes wholesale silver as “three nines,” or 999, and states that London Good Delivery silver bars have a minimum fineness of 999. That standard applies to a particular wholesale bar and refiner system; a small retail item stamped .999 is not automatically an LBMA Good Delivery bar.
.999 is commonly called fine silver, but the purity mark alone does not prove:
- authenticity;
- weight;
- manufacturer;
- Good Delivery status;
- collectible value;
- resale liquidity.
Is .9999 Silver More Pure Than .999 Silver?
Yes, by nominal fineness:
- .9999 = 99.99% silver;
- .999 = 99.9% silver.
For 100 grams of gross metal:
- .9999 contains 99.99 grams of silver;
- .999 contains 99.9 grams of silver;
- difference: 0.09 gram of silver.
The higher fineness does not automatically make a product a better purchase. Product price, premium, recognition, condition, size, taxes, and dealer buyback terms can matter more than the 0.09% purity difference.
What Is Sterling Silver?
Sterling silver is an alloy containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metal by nominal weight. It is commonly marked:
- 925;
- .925;
- Sterling;
- Ster;
- another locally recognized sterling mark.
Copper is a common alloying metal because it improves hardness and durability compared with high-purity silver.
The name “sterling” describes composition, not weight. A heavy sterling object can contain more fine silver than a small .999 object.
For a solid 200-gram sterling item:
200 g × 0.925 = 185 g of fine silver
However, do not include handles, knife blades, cement filling, resin, wood, glass, stones, or other non-silver components in gross silver-alloy weight.
What Is Britannia Silver?
Britannia silver is a higher-purity British silver standard commonly associated with fineness .9584, or 95.84% silver.
For 100 grams of solid .9584 alloy:
100 g × 0.9584 = 95.84 g of fine silver
Britannia silver contains more silver per gram than sterling silver:

Do not assume that every product using the word “Britannia” has .9584 purity. The word can appear in a coin name, design, brand, or product series. Read the specific year and product specification.
What Is .900 or “Coin Silver”?
.900 silver contains 90% silver by weight. It was used for many historical circulation coins in different countries.
The expression coin silver is less precise than a numerical fineness. It may refer to an alloy associated with coinage or to objects made from melted coins, but coin standards have varied by place and period.
For a calculation, do not assume that every old silver-colored coin is .900. Identify the exact type, date, mint, nominal weight, and official composition.
When reliable coin specifications state actual silver weight, use that figure directly. It can be more accurate than multiplying rounded gross weight by a rounded purity.
How to Calculate Fine Silver Weight
If gross weight and purity are known:
Fine silver weight = Gross weight × Purity as a decimal
For a gram-denominated product:
Fine silver grams = Gross grams × Purity
To convert fine silver grams to troy ounces:
Fine silver troy ounces = Fine silver grams ÷ 31.1034768
If an official specification already states that a coin or bar contains a particular amount of fine silver, use that content directly. Do not apply purity again.
Once fine silver weight is known:
Silver melt value = Fine silver troy ounces × Silver spot price per troy ounce
Example 1: A One-Ounce .999 Silver Product
The phrase “one ounce .999 fine silver” must be read together with the official specification.
If the specification guarantees one fine troy ounce of silver, use:
Fine silver content = 1.000 troy oz
Do not multiply that stated fine content by .999 again.
If a different hypothetical product is specified only as 1.000 troy ounce gross weight at .999 purity, its calculated fine silver content would be:
1.000 × 0.999 = 0.999 fine troy oz
The difference comes from what the stated ounce represents: guaranteed fine content or total alloy weight.
The United States Mint describes the American Silver Eagle as one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and lists a weight of 1.000 troy ounce. For valuation, use the Mint’s stated fine-silver guarantee rather than trying to manufacture extra precision from rounded public specifications.
Example 2: 100 Grams of Sterling Silver
Suppose a solid item has:
- gross silver-alloy weight: 100 grams;
- purity: .925;
- hypothetical silver spot price: $32 per troy ounce.
Fine silver weight:
100 g × 0.925 = 92.5 g
Convert to troy ounces:
92.5 ÷ 31.1034768 = 2.973944 fine troy oz
Calculate melt value:
2.973944 × $32 = $95.17
This value assumes that the full 100 grams is solid sterling alloy. If the object contains non-silver parts or internal filling, those must be excluded.
Example 3: A 26.73-Gram .900 Silver Coin
Consider a hypothetical coin with:
- gross weight: 26.73 grams;
- fineness: .900;
- hypothetical silver spot price: $32 per troy ounce.
Fine silver grams:
26.73 × 0.900 = 24.057 g
Fine silver troy ounces:
24.057 ÷ 31.1034768 = 0.773451 fine troy oz
Silver value:
0.773451 × $32 = $24.75
The result is the spot-based value of the contained silver, not necessarily the coin’s retail or collector price.
Example 4: 50 Grams of Britannia Silver
Suppose a solid object weighs 50 grams and is .9584 silver:
50 g × 0.9584 = 47.92 g of fine silver
Convert to troy ounces:
47.92 ÷ 31.1034768 = 1.540664 fine troy oz
At a hypothetical silver spot price of $32:
1.540664 × $32 = $49.30
The same 50-gram object at .925 purity would contain 46.25 grams of silver. Purity changes fine silver content even when gross weight remains the same.
Bullion Silver vs. Jewelry and Silverware
High-purity bullion, sterling jewelry, silverware, and circulation coins can all contain silver, but they are evaluated differently.
Bullion
Bullion products are commonly sold primarily for precious-metal content. Their price can be compared with melt value and premium over spot.
Jewelry and decorative objects
The retail price may include craftsmanship, design, brand, stones, age, condition, and distribution costs. Melt value represents only contained silver.
Historical coins
A coin’s collector value may exceed silver value because of rarity, grade, mint, date, demand, or historical interest. Calculating fine silver content does not determine numismatic value.
Scrap or mixed objects
Refining, sorting, testing, payment spreads, contamination, solder, and non-metal components can reduce a real purchase offer below theoretical melt value.
Solid Silver vs. Silver-Plated and Weighted Items
Do not apply a sterling or fine-silver percentage to the total weight of an item unless the relevant metal portion is a solid alloy throughout.
- Solid silver alloy: silver is distributed through the metal portion.
- Silver-plated: a base-metal object has a thin silver surface layer.
- Weighted sterling: a sterling shell may surround cement, resin, pitch, or another non-silver material.
- Composite object: only some components may be silver alloy.
A stamp that describes a silver surface does not mean the entire object is sterling or fine silver. For plated products, the silver mass cannot normally be calculated from total product weight and surface purity alone.
Reading Silver Marks and Hallmarks
Depending on the country, time period, and product, a silver item may carry:
- numerical fineness;
- a traditional silver symbol;
- a maker or sponsor mark;
- assay-office mark;
- date letter;
- mint or refiner name;
- weight and serial number.
The UK government’s hallmarking guidance explains that a complete UK hallmark identifies the sponsor, metal fineness, and assay office. Other markets have different systems.
A 925 stamp by itself is not conclusive proof that an item is sterling silver. Marks can be absent, worn, misunderstood, or falsified. Compare the complete marking set with reliable references for the relevant jurisdiction and period.
Does Tarnish Change Silver Purity?
Tarnish is a surface reaction and does not normally mean that the underlying alloy has changed from .999 to .925 or another bulk purity.
However, surface condition can affect appearance, collectible value, and the accuracy of some surface-based testing methods. Aggressive cleaning can also damage coins, finishes, or historically important surfaces.
Do not polish collectible coins simply to make them appear more silver-like. Purity and authenticity should be assessed from specifications and appropriate testing, not shine alone.
Can a Purity Mark Prove Silver Is Genuine?
No. A mark is a claim about composition.
Silver assessment may include:
- checking official weight and dimensions;
- inspecting edges, seams, and complete hallmarks;
- magnetic response as a limited screening check;
- electrical-conductivity testing;
- specific-gravity measurement;
- X-ray fluorescence or other spectrometric testing;
- destructive assay in professional contexts.
No single simple test is perfect. A magnet can reject some obvious base metals, but a non-magnetic result does not prove silver. Surface testing may not reveal a different core.
How Silver Purity Affects Premium Calculations
Premium should be calculated relative to fine silver value, not gross product weight.
Suppose two products each cost $120:

- calculate melt value;
- subtract melt value from product price;
- divide the difference by melt value to calculate premium percentage.

Common Silver-Purity Mistakes
Reading .925 as 92.5 grams
.925 is a proportion. The number of silver grams depends on gross weight. A 10-gram sterling item contains 9.25 grams of silver.
Assuming .999 means mathematically pure silver
.999 means 99.9% nominal purity. For exact calculations, use 0.999 rather than 1.000 unless the product specification separately guarantees a stated fine silver content.
Treating every “one-ounce .999” label identically
Determine whether one ounce describes gross weight or guaranteed fine silver content. Official product wording controls the calculation.
Multiplying stated fine content by purity again
If a mint guarantees one fine troy ounce of silver, do not reduce that amount by .999 a second time.
Applying purity to total object weight
Packaging, stones, handles, steel blades, resin, cement, and base-metal cores are not silver-alloy weight.
Treating silver plate as solid silver
The silver layer may be a small fraction of total weight. A plated item cannot be valued as though the entire object were .925 or .999.
Assuming every old coin is .900 silver
Coin compositions vary by denomination, year, mint, and country. Some silver-colored coins contain no silver.
Assuming higher purity always means a lower premium
Premium also depends on product size, production cost, demand, supply, brand, condition, payment method, and dealer pricing.
Ignoring collectible value
Rare coins or antique silver may sell above metal value. Melt value is a baseline, not a complete appraisal.
