How to Calculate Bullion Premium Over Spot
Learn how to calculate bullion premium over spot in dollars and percentages, with formulas and examples for coins, rounds, and bars.
To calculate a bullion product’s premium over spot, first determine the market value of the pure metal it contains. Subtract that metal value from the product price, then divide the difference by the metal value to express the premium as a percentage.
The basic formulas are:
Premium amount = Product price − Metal value
Premium percentage = Premium amount ÷ Metal value × 100
For example, if a silver product contains one troy ounce of fine silver, the spot price is $32, and the product costs $36.80, its premium is $4.80, or 15%.

The Bullion Premium Formula
A complete premium calculation uses four values:
- the product price;
- the current spot price of the metal;
- the product’s weight;
- its purity, or fineness.
If the product’s weight is given in troy ounces, calculate its fine metal content as follows:
Fine metal content = Gross weight in troy ounces × Purity
Then calculate the metal value:
Metal value = Fine metal content × Spot price per troy ounce
Finally, calculate the premium:
Premium amount = Product price − Metal value
Premium percentage = Premium amount ÷ Metal value × 100
You can also normalize the premium to one troy ounce:
Premium per troy ounce = Premium amount ÷ Fine metal content
This last figure is useful when comparing fractional coins, small bars, and products containing different quantities of metal.
If a mint or refiner states the product’s actual fine metal content, use that figure directly. It is usually more reliable than deriving the content from rounded weight and purity specifications.
What Information Do You Need?
Before starting the calculation, collect the following information.
Product price
Use the price that applies to the quantity and payment method you intend to use. Dealers may show different prices for bank transfers, cards, checks, or larger orders.
For an initial product-premium comparison, use the price before shipping and taxes. You can then perform a second calculation using the complete acquisition cost.
Spot price
Use the current spot price for the same metal and currency as the product price.
The London Bullion Market Association describes spot trading as precious-metal trading for immediate delivery. Retail bullion products are normally priced using spot as a starting point, but the displayed spot price may differ slightly between data providers.
Record the spot price at approximately the same time as the dealer price. Comparing today’s product price with yesterday’s spot price can produce a misleading result.
Weight
Precious metals are normally quoted in troy ounces, not regular ounces, which are commonly used for household goods.
According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology:
1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams
If the product weight is given in grams, convert it using:
Weight in troy ounces = Weight in grams ÷ 31.1034768
Do not use the regular-ounce conversion of approximately 28.35 grams.
Purity or fineness
Purity describes what proportion of a product’s weight is the selected precious metal.

For karat gold, the basic conversion is:
Purity = Karat ÷ 24
However, use the official product specification whenever possible. Nominal fineness and rounded marketing descriptions may not provide enough precision for an exact calculation.
How to Calculate Premium Over Spot Step by Step
The calculation can be divided into five steps.
Step 1: Determine the fine metal content
If the product specification already states that it contains one troy ounce of fine silver or one-quarter troy ounce of fine gold, use that amount directly.
Otherwise:
Fine metal content = Gross weight × Purity
If the gross weight is in grams:
Fine metal content in troy ounces = Gross weight in grams × Purity ÷ 31.1034768
Step 2: Calculate the metal value
Multiply the fine metal content by the current spot price:
Metal value = Fine metal content in troy ounces × Spot price per troy ounce
This figure is also commonly called the product’s melt value.
Step 3: Calculate the premium amount
Subtract the metal value from the product price:
Premium amount = Product price − Metal value
The result shows how many dollars, euros, or other currency units you are paying above the value of the metal.
Step 4: Calculate the premium percentage
Divide the premium amount by the metal value:
Premium percentage = Premium amount ÷ Metal value × 100
The percentage makes it possible to compare products with very different prices.
Step 5: Calculate premium per troy ounce when necessary
For products containing more or less than one troy ounce:
Premium per troy ounce = Premium amount ÷ Fine metal content
This prevents the total premium on a large bar from being compared directly with the total premium on a small coin.
Example 1: One-Ounce Silver Round
Suppose a silver round contains exactly one troy ounce of fine silver.
- Silver spot price: $32.00 per troy ounce
- Product price: $36.80
- Fine silver content: 1.000 troy ounce
First, calculate the metal value:
1.000 × $32.00 = $32.00
Next, calculate the premium amount:
$36.80 − $32.00 = $4.80
Then calculate the percentage:
$4.80 ÷ $32.00 × 100 = 15%
The round therefore has:
- a $4.80 total premium;
- a $4.80 premium per troy ounce;
- a 15% premium over spot.
Because the product contains exactly one fine troy ounce, its total premium and premium per ounce are the same.
Example 2: Gold Coin Priced in Grams
Consider a hypothetical non-collectible gold coin with:
- Gross weight: 10.00 grams
- Purity: .900
- Gold spot price: $2,400 per troy ounce
- Product price: $735
First, calculate the fine gold weight in grams:
10.00 g × 0.900 = 9.00 g of fine gold
Convert the fine gold weight to troy ounces:
9.00 ÷ 31.1034768 = 0.289357 troy ounces
Calculate the metal value:
0.289357 × $2,400 = $694.46
Calculate the premium amount:
$735.00 − $694.46 = $40.54
Calculate the premium percentage:
$40.54 ÷ $694.46 × 100 = 5.84%
The coin’s calculated premium is therefore $40.54, or approximately 5.84% over its gold value.
This example demonstrates why the product’s gross weight cannot be multiplied directly by the spot price. Only 90% of its weight is gold, and the gram weight must first be converted to troy ounces.
Example 3: Fractional Gold Bullion
Suppose a fractional gold product contains 0.25 troy ounce of fine gold.
- Gold spot price: $2,400 per troy ounce
- Product price: $650
- Fine gold content: 0.25 troy ounce
Its metal value is:
0.25 × $2,400 = $600
Its total premium is:
$650 − $600 = $50
Its percentage premium is:
$50 ÷ $600 × 100 = 8.33%
However, its premium normalized to one troy ounce is:
$50 ÷ 0.25 = $200 per troy ounce
The product is therefore $50 over its own metal value, but its normalized premium is $200 per troy ounce.
This distinction is important when a dealer describes a fractional product as a certain number of dollars “over spot.” Check whether that figure applies to the individual item or to one full troy ounce.
How to Compare Products of Different Sizes
A product’s total premium is not enough to determine which offer is less expensive relative to its metal content.
Assume silver spot is $32 per troy ounce:

The ten-ounce bar has a much larger total premium because it contains ten times more silver. However, both its premium per ounce and percentage premium are lower.
For comparisons across different sizes, use:
- premium percentage;
- premium per fine troy ounce;
- total cost per fine troy ounce.
Do not select a product solely because its total dollar premium appears smaller.
Calculating the Price per Fine Troy Ounce
Another useful comparison metric is the complete product price divided by its fine metal content:
Price per fine troy ounce = Product price ÷ Fine metal content
Using the ten-ounce bar from the previous example:
$350.40 ÷ 10 = $35.04 per fine troy ounce
With a spot price of $32, this produces:
$35.04 − $32.00 = $3.04 premium per troy ounce
This method is especially useful when comparing products with different weights or purities. It converts each offer into a common unit before comparing prices.
Product Premium vs. All-In Premium
The product premium normally compares the listed bullion price with the value of the metal. It may not include shipping, insurance, payment fees, taxes, or dealer discounts.
To calculate your complete acquisition cost:
All-in cost = Product price + Shipping + Insurance + Payment fees + Applicable taxes − Discounts
Then calculate:
All-in premium = All-in cost − Metal value
All-in premium percentage = All-in premium ÷ Metal value × 100
For example, suppose you buy ten one-ounce silver rounds at $36.80 each when silver spot is $32:
- Product total: $368
- Shipping: $12
- Fine silver value: $320
- All-in cost: $380
The product-only premium is:
$368 − $320 = $48, or 15%
The all-in premium is:
$380 − $320 = $60, or 18.75%
Both figures are useful. The product-only premium helps compare dealer listings, while the all-in premium shows your actual cost relative to the metal value.
If an order contains several different products, order-level shipping or discounts must be allocated between them before calculating a precise all-in premium for each item.
How to Calculate a Maximum Purchase Price
The formulas can also be reversed to determine a maximum price for a chosen premium percentage.
Maximum product price = Metal value × (1 + Target premium percentage ÷ 100)
Suppose a product’s metal value is $500 and you do not want to pay more than 6% over that value:
$500 × (1 + 6 ÷ 100) = $530
A price of $530 represents a 6% premium. Any additional shipping, payment fees, or taxes would increase the all-in percentage.
This calculation does not determine whether 6% is objectively a good premium. It simply translates a selected percentage into a maximum product price.
Common Premium-Calculation Mistakes
Using total weight instead of fine metal content
A product’s gross weight may include copper or another alloy. Multiply gross weight by purity unless the fine metal content is already stated.
Applying purity twice
If the specification says that a product contains one troy ounce of fine gold, that amount normally already describes its precious-metal content. Multiplying it by purity again would understate the metal value.
This is particularly important for some alloyed bullion coins. A one-ounce designation may refer to the amount of fine precious metal rather than the product’s complete gross weight.
Confusing troy ounces with regular ounces
One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, while a regular avoirdupois ounce is approximately 28.35 grams. Using the wrong conversion changes both melt value and premium.
Comparing prices from different times
Spot prices can move while you compare dealer pages. Use dealer prices and spot prices recorded at approximately the same time.
Comparing different payment methods
A dealer’s headline price may require a bank transfer, a minimum quantity, or a membership. Use the price that actually applies to your order.
Ignoring purity
Two products of the same gross weight can contain different quantities of precious metal. Compare fine metal content rather than weight alone.
Dividing by the retail price
Premium percentage is normally calculated relative to the metal value:
Premium ÷ Metal value × 100
Dividing the premium by the retail product price produces a different percentage and should not be labeled as premium over spot.
Treating collectible value as an ordinary bullion premium
Rare or graded coins may be priced primarily for scarcity, condition, or collector demand. The mathematical difference above melt can still be calculated, but it may not represent a normal bullion premium.
Why Might Your Result Differ From a Dealer’s?
Small differences do not necessarily mean that either calculation is wrong.
Possible causes include:
- different spot-price providers;
- a change in spot price between calculations;
- use of bid, ask, or midpoint prices;
- rounded purity or weight specifications;
- quantity discounts;
- payment-method adjustments;
- a premium quoted per ounce rather than per item;
- shipping or other charges included in one figure but not the other.
When comparing results, confirm that both calculations use the same spot price, timestamp, currency, fine metal content, and definition of product price.
Can a Premium Be Negative?
A negative result means that the product price is below the calculated value of its metal:
Product price − Metal value < 0
This can occur with a limited promotion, a dealer buyback offer, or a mismatch between the spot price and product-price timestamp. It can also indicate an incorrect weight, purity, currency, or unit conversion.
Before treating a below-spot listing as a genuine discount, verify all inputs and check whether the offer has quantity, account, or payment restrictions.
