Spot Price vs. Melt Value: What’s the Difference?

Learn the difference between spot price and melt value, how weight and purity affect a coin or bar, and why retail and resale prices can differ.

Spot price is the market price of one standard unit of a precious metal, usually one troy ounce. Melt value is the value of the pure metal contained in a specific coin, round, or bar. A product’s melt value therefore depends on three inputs: the metal’s spot price, the product’s weight, and its purity or stated fine metal content.

For a product containing exactly one troy ounce of fine silver, a silver spot price of $32 produces a melt value of $32. A smaller, heavier, or lower-purity product will have a different melt value even though the quoted spot price is the same.

Spot price and melt value answer different questions.

  • Spot price: What is one standard unit of this precious metal worth in the market?
  • Melt value: What is the pure precious metal inside this particular item worth at that spot price?

The London Bullion Market Association explains that precious-metal prices are generally quoted per troy ounce and that fineness describes the proportion of precious metal in a bar, plate, or ingot. Those two ideas—price per unit and fine metal content—are combined when calculating melt value.

The basic relationship is:

Melt value = Fine metal content in troy ounces × Spot price per troy ounce

If a product contains one fine troy ounce, its melt value will be approximately equal to the spot price. If it contains half a fine troy ounce, its melt value will be half the spot price. If it contains several troy ounces, its melt value will be a corresponding multiple of spot.

What Is Spot Price?

Spot price is a current market reference price for a precious metal. Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium are commonly quoted in currency units per troy ounce.

International benchmarks exist for all four metals. The LBMA Precious Metal Prices are global benchmark prices for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium delivered in London.

The spot price displayed on a dealer site or financial service may not match another source exactly. Differences can result from:

  • different market-data feeds;
  • bid, ask, or midpoint pricing;
  • update timing;
  • currency conversion;
  • temporary market delays.

For a consistent comparison, use the same spot-price source, currency, and approximate timestamp for every product.

Spot price is a price per unit. It does not by itself tell you the value of a specific coin or bar unless you also know how much fine metal that product contains.

What Is Melt Value?

Melt value is the theoretical market value of the precious metal contained in an item at a selected spot price. It is also commonly called metal value, bullion value, or intrinsic metal value in bullion comparisons.

Despite the name, calculating melt value does not mean that the product should or will actually be melted. It is a valuation method.

Melt value normally excludes:

  • minting and fabrication costs;
  • dealer premiums and margins;
  • shipping, insurance, taxes, and payment fees;
  • collectible or numismatic value;
  • grading and certification value;
  • refining, assaying, or selling costs.

For this reason, melt value is not necessarily the price you will pay to buy an item or the amount a dealer or refiner will pay when you sell it.

Melt Value Formula

If the product specification provides its actual fine metal content in troy ounces, use the direct formula:

Melt value = Stated fine metal content × Spot price per troy ounce

If only gross weight and purity are known, calculate the fine metal content first:

Fine metal content = Gross weight × Purity

When weight is already expressed in troy ounces:

Melt value = Gross weight in troy ounces × Purity × Spot price per troy ounce

When weight is expressed in grams:

Fine metal content in troy ounces = Weight in grams × Purity ÷ 31.1034768

Then:

Melt value = Fine metal content in troy ounces × Spot price per troy ounce

The National Institute of Standards and Technology gives the precise conversion used here:

1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams

Do not use the ordinary avoirdupois-ounce conversion of approximately 28.35 grams. Precious metals use the troy-weight system.

Fine Metal Content vs. Gross Weight

Gross weight is the weight of the complete product. Fine metal content is the amount of the selected precious metal inside it.

These numbers can be nearly identical for a high-purity bar, but they can differ substantially for an alloyed coin.

For example, a 22-karat gold coin contains gold plus another metal or metals added to the alloy. Its gross weight therefore includes more than gold. Multiplying the complete weight by the gold spot price would overstate its gold value.

There is one important exception to the calculation process: if the mint already states the quantity of fine gold, fine silver, or another fine metal, use that amount directly. Do not multiply it by purity a second time.

The one-ounce American Gold Eagle illustrates this distinction. The United States Mint lists it as 91.67% gold with a gross weight of 1.0909 troy ounces, while stating that it contains one troy ounce of fine gold. Its melt-value calculation therefore uses 1.000 fine troy ounce, not 1.0909 ounces and not 1.000 multiplied by 91.67%.

How Purity and Fineness Affect Melt Value

Purity tells you what share of the product’s gross weight is the selected precious metal. Fineness is usually written in parts per thousand.

The Royal Mint explains that a fineness of 999.9 means 99.99% precious metal. In calculations, convert the marking to a decimal multiplier.

For gold expressed in karats:

Purity = Karat ÷ 24

For example:

18 ÷ 24 = 0.750, or 75% gold

Use the official product specification when available. Rounded karat and fineness descriptions can create small differences in the final result.

Example 1: One Fine Troy Ounce of Silver

Suppose a silver bar is specified to contain exactly one troy ounce of fine silver, and the silver spot price is $32 per troy ounce.

Its melt value is:

1.000 × $32 = $32

If the dealer price is $36.80, $32 is still the bar’s melt value at the selected spot price. The remaining $4.80 is the product’s premium over that value:

$36.80 − $32.00 = $4.80

The melt-value calculation establishes the base metal value. The premium calculation explains the difference between that base and the product price.

Example 2: Sterling Silver Priced by Weight

Consider a hypothetical silver item with:

  • Gross weight: 100 grams
  • Purity: .925 sterling silver
  • Silver spot price: $32 per troy ounce

First calculate the fine silver weight:

100 g × 0.925 = 92.5 g of fine silver

Convert that amount to troy ounces:

92.5 ÷ 31.1034768 = 2.973944 fine troy ounces

Then calculate the melt value:

2.973944 × $32 = $95.17

The item’s melt value is approximately $95.17 at the selected spot price.

Using the full 100-gram weight without adjusting for .925 purity would incorrectly treat the alloy as pure silver and overstate the result.

Example 3: A 10-Gram .9999 Gold Bar

Suppose a gold bar has:

  • Gross weight: 10 grams
  • Purity: .9999
  • Gold spot price: $2,400 per troy ounce

Calculate the fine gold weight:

10 g × 0.9999 = 9.999 g of fine gold

Convert to troy ounces:

9.999 ÷ 31.1034768 = 0.321475 fine troy ounce

Calculate the melt value:

0.321475 × $2,400 = $771.54

The bar’s melt value is approximately $771.54. Its retail price may be higher because a physical ten-gram bar also carries fabrication, packaging, distribution, and dealer costs.

Example 4: A One-Ounce 22-Karat Gold Coin

Suppose an alloyed bullion coin is officially specified to contain one troy ounce of fine gold, even though its total weight is greater than one troy ounce.

At a gold spot price of $2,400 per fine troy ounce:

1.000 × $2,400 = $2,400

The melt value of its gold content is $2,400.

You do not need to reduce the stated one-ounce fine gold content by the coin’s purity. The alloy increases the coin’s gross weight; it does not reduce the mint’s stated amount of fine gold.

This is why the label “one ounce” must be interpreted carefully. It may describe gross product weight or guaranteed fine metal content, depending on the specification.

Spot Price vs. Melt Value vs. Retail Price

These terms represent different stages of a bullion valuation.

For a normal bullion product:

Retail price = Melt value + Bullion premium

The percentage premium is calculated relative to melt value:

Premium percentage = (Retail price − Melt value) ÷ Melt value × 100

Why Can a Product’s Price Be Higher Than Melt Value?

Melt value measures the precious metal, not the complete physical product or its market demand.

A bullion coin, round, or bar may sell above melt value because its price includes:

  • refining and fabrication;
  • minting and quality control;
  • assay cards, capsules, or other packaging;
  • secure transport, insurance, and storage;
  • wholesale and retail distribution;
  • dealer operating costs and margin;
  • recognition and ease of resale;
  • temporary supply and demand.

Smaller and fractional products often have higher percentage premiums because fixed production and handling costs are spread across less metal.

A higher retail price does not increase the quantity of precious metal inside the product. It increases the amount paid above melt value.

Why Can Collectible Value Be Much Higher Than Melt Value?

Melt value can be useful as a metal-value reference for a collectible coin, but it may explain only a small part of the market price.

A rare or collectible coin may be valued for:

  • scarcity or low mintage;
  • condition and grade;
  • historical importance;
  • a desirable date, mint mark, or variety;
  • provenance;
  • collector demand.

For such an item, the difference between market price and melt value should not automatically be treated as an ordinary bullion premium. A specialist coin valuation and comparable sales may be more relevant than a bullion-only calculation.

The reverse can also occur: damage, uncertain authenticity, lack of recognition, or limited demand may reduce the amount a buyer is willing to offer even when the theoretical metal value is known.

Is Melt Value the Amount You Receive When Selling?

Not necessarily. Melt value is a calculated reference, not a guaranteed offer.

A dealer, refiner, or other buyer may offer:

  • below melt value;
  • approximately melt value;
  • above melt value for a recognized product in demand.

The actual offer can reflect:

  • dealer spread and margin;
  • testing or assay requirements;
  • refining costs and expected recovery;
  • minimum quantities;
  • product condition and authenticity;
  • current inventory and customer demand;
  • the time gap between the quoted spot price and settlement.

If you are evaluating a sale, compare the actual net offers available to you rather than assuming the calculated melt value will be paid in full.

Does the Value of Alloy Metals Count?

A standard gold or silver melt-value calculation usually values the selected precious metal only. It may not include copper, nickel, or other metals in the alloy.

For most investment bullion comparisons, this convention is practical because the main precious metal accounts for most of the product’s metal value. For material containing meaningful quantities of several valuable metals, a more complete estimate can be made by calculating each known metal separately and adding the results:

Combined metal value = Value of metal A + Value of metal B + Value of metal C

Common Melt-Value Mistakes

Treating spot price as the value of every “one-ounce” product

Check whether one ounce refers to gross weight or fine metal content. Purity may need to be applied.

Using gross weight without adjusting for purity

Alloyed coins and bars contain less fine precious metal than their total weight unless a separate fine-content guarantee is stated.

Applying purity twice

If a product already states its fine metal content, use that amount directly. Do not multiply it by purity again.

Confusing troy ounces with regular ounces

One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams. A regular ounce is a different unit.

Using the wrong metal’s spot price

Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium each have their own price. Match the price to the metal being valued.

Mixing currencies

If the spot price is in U.S. dollars and the product price is in euros, convert one value before comparing them.

Adding the premium to melt value

Premium affects retail price, not melt value. Melt value includes the metal component only.

Assuming melt value is a guaranteed buyback price

An actual offer may include a discount, spread, testing cost, or refining allowance.

Using a stale spot price

Melt value changes when spot price changes. Use a price and timestamp appropriate to the comparison.

How Changes in Spot Price Affect Melt Value

When weight and purity remain constant, melt value changes in direct proportion to spot price.

Suppose a product contains 0.5 fine troy ounce of gold:

Every $100 change in the gold spot price changes this product’s melt value by $50 because it contains half a fine troy ounce.

The retail price may not move by exactly the same amount or percentage. Premiums can widen or narrow as supply, demand, and dealer inventory change.

Is melt value the same as spot price?

Does melt value include a dealer premium?

No. Premium is the amount paid above melt value. It is calculated separately.

Does melt value include shipping or tax?

No. Melt value is based on metal content and spot price. Shipping, payment fees, insurance, and taxes affect acquisition cost rather than the contained metal value.

How often does melt value change?

It changes whenever the selected spot price changes. The product’s weight and purity normally remain fixed, but its spot-based value moves with the market.

Can a coin sell below its melt value?

Yes. A buyback offer can be below calculated melt value, and an unusual retail promotion may also be priced near or below it. Before relying on such a figure, verify the timestamp, units, purity, currency, fees, and offer conditions.

Can I calculate melt value for platinum and palladium?

Yes. The formula is the same: multiply the product’s fine platinum or palladium content by the corresponding spot price. Do not use gold or silver prices for those metals.
