How Bullion Premium Calculations Work
See the formulas, units, purity rules, rounding, and limitations used to calculate fine metal weight, melt value, and premium over spot.
This page documents how the web-based Bullion Premium Calculator interprets inputs and calculates fine metal weight, melt value, premium amount, and premium percentage.
The goal is reproducibility: if you use the same inputs and formulas, you should be able to independently check the result with an ordinary calculator.
Calculator Scope
The web calculator can be used for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium when the entered weight, purity, and spot price all describe the same metal. The mathematical steps are the same for every metal. The current web interface has no metal selector, so the metal is context supplied by the user and does not change the calculation.
The web version uses:
- a spot price entered manually by the user;
- gross product weight entered in troy ounces;
- purity entered as a decimal or a fineness value;
- the total item price entered in the same currency as the spot price.
The current web interface labels spot price and item price in U.S. dollars and formats monetary results as U.S. dollars. The web calculator does not automatically retrieve a live spot price. This is intentional: it allows a current, historical, bid, ask, or dealer-displayed price to be tested, provided the user applies it consistently.
Input Definitions
Spot price
The spot-price input is the price of one troy ounce of pure metal. The current web form labels this value in U.S. dollars. The item price must use the same currency as the spot price; mixing currencies produces a meaningless result.
Because the price is entered manually, the result reflects the exact value supplied by the user. Bullion Premium does not replace it with a different quote or adjust it for the time of day.
Published benchmark information is available from sources such as the LBMA Precious Metal Prices page. A benchmark, a live trading quote, and a dealer’s displayed spot price may differ because of timing, market, currency, bid/ask convention, or data licensing. Use the price that matches the comparison you are trying to make.
Gross weight
Gross weight is the total weight of the coin, round, bar, or other product, including both precious metal and any alloying metal.
The web calculator expects gross weight in troy ounces, not regular avoirdupois ounces. One troy ounce equals exactly 480 grains, or:
1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams
If a product’s weight is given in grams, convert it before entering the value:
gross weight in troy ounces = gross weight in grams / 31.1034768
For example, a 50 gram bar has a gross troy-ounce weight of approximately:
50 / 31.1034768 = 1.60754 troy ounces

Purity or fineness
Purity represents the share of the gross weight that is the selected precious metal. The calculator accepts either:
- a decimal purity greater than zero through
1, such as0.999,0.925, or0.9167; or - a fineness value greater than
1through1000, such as999,925, or916.7.
When the entered value is greater than 1, the web calculator interprets it as fineness and divides it by 1,000:
purity factor = entered fineness / 1000

Do not enter a percentage such as 99.9 to mean 99.9%. Because it is greater than 1, it would be treated as fineness and converted to 0.0999. Enter 0.999 or 999 instead.
If gold purity is provided only in karats, the theoretical conversion is:
decimal purity = karats / 24
The web calculator does not convert karat values. A value greater than 1 through 24 is still treated as fineness and may trigger a warning to check whether karat was entered by mistake.
When an official product specification provides an exact fineness, use that stated fineness instead of relying on a rounded karat conversion. See Gold Purity Explained and Silver Purity Explained for more detail.
Item price
Item price is the total price being evaluated for one item or for the complete quantity represented by the entered weight. The weight and price must describe the same quantity.
For example, if the price is for a tube of 20 coins, enter the combined gross weight of all 20 coins. If the price is for one coin, enter the weight of one coin.
The current web form labels item price in U.S. dollars. It must use the same currency as the spot price. The formulas themselves are currency-neutral, but the current interface and displayed monetary results use U.S. dollar labels.
Validation and Accepted Ranges
The calculator accepts finite numeric values within these boundaries:
- spot price must be greater than zero;
- gross weight must be greater than zero;
- decimal purity must be greater than zero through
1, or fineness must be greater than1through1000; - item price may be zero or greater.
Empty fields, non-numeric values, negative values outside those boundaries, and purity above 1000 are rejected. The inputs must also produce finite results and a melt value greater than zero; values too large or too small to calculate reliably are rejected instead of displaying an infinite or undefined result.
A negative premium is not a validation error. An unusually high premium, or a purity entry that resembles karat, may produce a warning while leaving the mathematical result available.
Calculation Sequence
The calculator performs four conceptual steps.
1. Fine metal weight
fine metal weight = gross weight × purity factor
Fine metal weight is expressed in troy ounces because gross weight is entered in troy ounces.
2. Melt value
melt value = fine metal weight × spot price per troy ounce
Melt value is the theoretical value of the contained precious metal at the entered spot price. It is not automatically the amount a dealer, refiner, or private buyer will pay.

3. Premium amount
premium amount = item price - melt value
A positive result means the item price is above calculated melt value. A negative result means the item price is below calculated melt value.
4. Premium percentage
premium percentage = (premium amount / melt value) × 100
The percentage uses melt value as its denominator. It answers this question:
How large is the difference between the item price and melt value, relative to melt value?

Worked Example: Positive Premium
Assume a hypothetical one-troy-ounce silver product with .999 purity:

Fine metal weight:
1.000 × 0.999 = 0.999 troy oz
Melt value:
0.999 × $30.00 = $29.97
Premium amount:
$34.50 - $29.97 = $4.53
Premium percentage:
($4.53 / $29.97) × 100 = 15.12%
The calculated premium is therefore $4.53, or approximately 15.12% of melt value.
Worked Example: Negative Premium
Negative premium values are allowed because an entered item price can be below the calculated melt value.
Assume a hypothetical gold item:

Fine metal weight:
0.500 × 0.900 = 0.450 troy oz
Melt value:
0.450 × $2,400.00 = $1,080.00
Premium amount:
$1,050.00 - $1,080.00 = -$30.00
Premium percentage:
(-$30.00 / $1,080.00) × 100 = -2.78%
A negative result is mathematically valid, but it is a reason to recheck the listing, quantity, units, purity, fees, and authenticity. It is not proof that a product is a bargain.
Rounding and Display Precision
The calculator retains the entered values and unrounded intermediate results through the calculation. Display formatting is applied only after the full result has been calculated, so manually recomputing a later step from an already rounded displayed value can produce a small difference.
The current web interface displays:
- premium amount and melt value as U.S. dollars with two decimal places;
- premium percentage with two decimal places;
- fine metal weight and normalized purity with up to eight decimal places.
For the most consistent comparison:
- use the same spot price for every product;
- keep as much precision as practical when converting grams to troy ounces;
- use the stated product fineness rather than a rounded description when available;
- compare final results only after applying the same assumptions to each product.
Displayed precision does not imply that the underlying product weight, purity, market price, or dealer quote is known to the same level of accuracy.
What the Result Includes
The result includes only the mathematical relationship between:
- entered gross weight;
- entered purity;
- entered spot price;
- entered item price.
Changing any of those values changes the result.
What the Result Does Not Include
Unless you deliberately include them in the item price, the calculator does not separately add or estimate:
- sales tax or value-added tax;
- shipping or insurance;
- payment-method surcharges;
- dealer commissions or marketplace fees;
- quantity discounts;
- foreign-exchange costs;
- assay, refining, or storage costs;
- dealer buyback spreads;
- collectible or numismatic value;
- product condition, grading, packaging, or provenance;
- counterparty, authenticity, or liquidity risk.
If the purpose is to compare the total amount paid, enter a price that includes every cost you want represented. Apply the same treatment to every product in the comparison.
Melt Value Is Not a Purchase or Resale Quote
Calculated melt value is a reference value, not an executable offer. A dealer or refiner may buy below spot, charge processing fees, reject a product, or pay more for a recognizable product with strong resale demand. A collectible coin may also trade primarily on factors other than metal content.
Likewise, premium percentage is not a forecast of future returns. A premium paid today may increase, decrease, or disappear in a later resale transaction.
Common Sources of Error
Before relying on a comparison, check for these problems:
- Regular ounces entered as troy ounces. A regular ounce and a troy ounce are different units.
- Grams entered without conversion. The web calculator’s weight field expects troy ounces.
- Percentage entered as fineness. Enter 99.9% purity as
0.999or999, not99.9. - Fine weight entered as gross weight with purity applied again. This reduces the calculated metal content twice.
- Price and weight describing different quantities. A tube price must be paired with tube weight, not single-coin weight.
- Spot and item prices in different currencies. Both inputs must use the same currency; the current web interface labels both as U.S. dollars.
- Stale or mismatched spot prices. Compare products using prices from the same time and the same pricing convention.
- Fees treated inconsistently. Decide whether item price includes tax, shipping, and payment fees, then use the same rule throughout the comparison.
Source and Review Policy
The formulas on this page are arithmetic definitions used by the calculator. Unit conversions and explanatory claims are checked against primary or authoritative sources where practical. The broader editorial policy and correction process explains how Bullion Premium selects sources and handles updates.
This methodology should be reviewed whenever calculator inputs, calculation logic, validation, units, or displayed results change. Its Updated date should change only after the published methodology and the calculator have been checked together.
